About
Every generation has its own story to tell. So does every individual. We have an innate desire to be known and to connect, individually and collectively. To be known for our thoughts, dreams, ideas and achievements. To connect with our own selves and with each other to live meaningful lives.
When our purpose is unknown and when we struggle to connect and to find meaning…when we feel isolated, our mental health suffers. We, as human beings, need each other to share our highs and lows and to thrive in life in a healthy way.
The Wellness Center, founded in January 2021 by Varuni Fernando, offers help and guidance to children, young people, and the community at large to live with hope and healing through counseling, psychotherapy and mental health education.
Varuni started her counseling work as a volunteer at Sri Lanka Sumithrayo in 2003 and has been serving the community independently for the past 18years. She is a certified Psychotherapist and holds diplomas in Psychology and Child Psychology (Institute of Mental Health, Colombo). As a passionate student of Psychology, she is also currently enrolled in further education at the University of London.
During her 20year career in the mercantile sector, Varuni had the opportunity to work for more than a decade in commercial training in the Asian region. With this experience in hand as well as her love for teaching Psychology, The Wellness Center offers short-term certificate programs in Counseling, Addiction Counseling, General Psychology and Mindfulness. Most of these training programs are online except for Art Therapy – which is taught on-site at The Wellness Center in Moratuwa.
In April 2023, The Wellness Center launched its own psychology magazine – Psychology Quarterly. This magazine provides education and awareness to the student as well as the enthusiast in psychology, counseling, anthropology, neuroscience and philosophy. The magazine will also have articles on society and latest research from the world of psychology. Research summaries and book reviews will be a regular feature. The magazine may be purchased here: https://www.thewellnesscenter.lk/product/psychology-quarterly/
